Are you Neurospicy? 🌶️
As a neurodivergent person (ASD), I am very well aware that I create handwoven scarves and scrunchies for me, and people like me - and I realised that I don't talk about this enough!
So if you understand that whole thing about 'I hate sock seams!', etc - then read on ...
Softness, Comfort, and Care: Why My Handwoven Scarves and Scrunchies Work for Neurodivergent Sensitivities
For many neurodivergent people, clothing isn’t just about style - it’s about survival! The way a seam scratches against skin, a tag rubs at the back of the neck, or a fabric feels too harsh can make a seemingly simple accessory impossible to wear. Textures that others may not even notice can quickly become overwhelming, distracting, or downright painful.
This is something I deeply understand and take to heart in my weaving practice! When I design and finish my handwoven scarves and scrunchies, comfort and sensory experience sit alongside beauty and individuality. Each piece isn’t only a creative expression - it’s also made to be kind to skin and wearable by people who are sensitive to textures.
Scarves with Considered Seams
Scarves are one of those items you want to wrap around yourself without thinking twice. But many store-bought scarves are sewn with bulky seams that dig into the neck or create irritating pressure points. I work hard to avoid this!
When I finish a scarf, I make the seam as flat and unobtrusive as possible. My aim is for it to disappear into the fabric rather than standing out as something your skin has to “put up with.” I also recommend a simple trick for even more comfort: fold the seam slightly outward so that it doesn’t sit directly against your skin. It’s a small adjustment, but it can make all the difference between a scarf that’s distracting and one that feels like a gentle cocoon.
The result is a scarf that you can wear throughout the day without fidgeting or adjusting. For anyone who struggles with seams that rub, this little detail means a lot.
Scrunchies That Stay Soft
Hair accessories can be another unexpected source of sensory irritation. Elastics often pull, pinch, or feel too tight. Many scrunchies on the market are made with cheap fabrics and bulky stitching, which can make them itchy or stiff.
My handwoven scrunchies are designed with softness in mind. The fabrics are woven by hand, which gives them a unique suppleness, and the seams are hidden away so they don’t touch the skin. Nothing scratchy, nothing stiff - just a gentle way to hold your hair back without constant discomfort.
Scrunchies should feel like they’re helping you, not bothering you. That’s exactly the experience I want my pieces to give: wearable comfort you can trust.
A Thoughtful Approach to Texture
Being neurodivergent myself, I know how something as small as an uncomfortable texture can throw off your entire day. Textiles are intimate objects - they sit right against your skin and become part of your sensory environment. When they don’t feel right, it’s not just an annoyance; it can drain your energy, distract you, and make social or work situations harder to cope with.
That’s why I take a sensory-first approach to my weaving. Before I think about colour palettes or patterns, I’m already considering how a fabric will feel. Will it be soft against bare skin? Will the structure allow movement without stiffness? Can the seam be finished in a way that won’t irritate?
Each scarf and scrunchie becomes a little collaboration between aesthetics and comfort. For me, they’re not just accessories - they’re small pieces of wearable care.
Style Without Sacrifice
For neurodivergent people, fashion often feels like a choice between looking good or feeling comfortable. I believe you should never have to sacrifice one for the other. My handwoven pieces let you express your individuality, embrace bold colours or subtle textures, and still know that what you’re wearing has been made with sensitivity in mind.
Whether it’s a scarf draped around your neck or a scrunchie keeping your hair out of your eyes, these pieces are designed to make you feel at ease while reflecting your unique style.
Because at the end of the day, what we wear should support us - not make life harder! And for those of us who experience the world a little differently, that thoughtful attention to comfort and texture can mean everything.
