How to Care for your Handwoven Scrunchie

How to Care for your Handwoven Scrunchie

You’ve got your hands on a handwoven scrunchie from Threefold Designs - beautiful, soft, with an edge of 80s cool. Now what?

These aren’t your average fast-fashion hair ties. Every scrunchie is made by hand using loom waste and offcuts from my weaving practice - which means each one is unique, low-waste, and woven with intention. They deserve a little love, and with the right care, they’ll keep their shape and colour for a long time.

Here’s how I care for mine - and how you can too.

✂️ What Makes These Scrunchies Special?

Each scrunchie is woven from natural cotton - soft enough to wear all day, but textured enough to feel substantial and secure. No thin elastics or mass-produced fabric here.

They’re handmade in my Adelaide studio using leftover warp ends and offcuts - turning what would be loom waste into wearable art. This makes them part of my zero-waste, slow fashion ethos, which means no two are ever exactly alike.

So if you’ve got a favourite? Treat it gently. It’s kind of irreplaceable.

🧺 Washing Your Handwoven Scrunchie

Because they’re made from natural fibres and handmade, it’s best to wash them carefully. You don’t need to do this often - but if they get a little dusty or stretched from lots of wear, here’s what to do:

  • Handwash in cold water with a mild detergent (like you would for lingerie or delicates).

  • Gently swish it around - don’t scrub or wring.

  • Rinse thoroughly and press gently between a towel to remove excess water.

  • Lay flat to dry - this helps keep the elastic from stretching and the weave from pulling out of shape.

I don’t recommend machine washing unless you put it in a protective laundry bag on a cold delicate cycle.

♻️ How to Store Them

Scrunchies are super easy to store - and the great thing about these ones is that they hold their shape well. But if you want to keep them looking pristine:

  • Don’t crush them under heavy items.

  • Avoid storing them wet or damp - the fibres need air.

  • You can even hang them on a hook or around a bottle of perfume to keep them handy and visible.

🖤 Slow Fashion = Long Life

What I love most about these scrunchies is that they’re small pieces of a larger story. They’re created from the threads of bigger woven works - carrying the same energy, texture, and soul as a full-length handwoven scarf. But they’re tiny, accessible, and totally wearable.

They’re also:

  • Australian-made

  • Eco-conscious

  • And with some 80s inspired cool, just like the rest of my range.

Each time you wear one, you’re choosing handmade over mass-produced, and texture over throwaway. Whether you wear them high and dramatic, low and soft, or just as a wrist accent, they’re here to add that quiet drama to your everyday look.
