How To Store and Care For Your Handwoven Scarves

One of the most common questions I get is:
“How do I store or wash my Threefold Designs scarf?”

And I love that people care, because each scarf is handwoven with intention - and with a little care, it’ll last you for years!

Unlike fast fashion accessories, these scarves are made slowly, from quality fibres, and designed to live with you long-term. So here’s exactly how I store, care for, and travel with my own collection - and how you can too.

🧵 How I Store My Handwoven Scarves
I roll each scarf into what I like to call a “jelly roll.” 😂
It’s simple, space-saving, and best of all - it helps avoid creases and the need to iron.

Here’s how to do it:

Lay your scarf out flat.

Smooth it gently with your hands (don’t stretch it!).

Roll it up loosely from one end like a cinnamon scroll.

Tuck it into a drawer, basket, or travel bag - done!

Rolling keeps the fibres relaxed, reduces pressure on the weave, and prevents harsh folds that can crease delicate textures. It also looks pretty cute, let’s be honest.

🧣 Prefer to Hang Them? You Can Do That Too.
If you prefer to hang your scarf, simply drape it over a coat hanger (ideally padded or wooden) to keep it flat. This works especially well if you’re short on drawer space or want to see your options at a glance. Think of it like a gallery wall of softness and colour.

Just avoid using clip hangers - they can leave marks or pull on the weave. Scarves like these are best treated with kindness.

🧺 Washing & Care Tips
All of my scarves are woven from fibres chosen for their texture, drape, and feel (cotton!) - so they’re fairly hardy, but still appreciate gentle treatment.

Washing:

The safest option is to handwash in cold water with a tiny drop of mild detergent.

You can also use the delicate cold cycle on your washing machine - just pop your scarf in a wash bag to protect it.

Avoid hot water, harsh detergents, or heavy spin cycles.

Drying:

Always lay flat to dry - on a towel or drying rack.

Don’t wring, twist, or hang from a clothesline (this can distort the weave).

Ironing:

If your scarf does get creased, you can iron it, but be very careful.

Use a low heat setting (or wool/silk setting), and always use a pressing cloth between the iron and your scarf.

Steam is okay, but not directly on delicate fibres.

Honestly, if you store it rolled, you’ll rarely need to iron at all - and that’s a win in my book 😉

🖤 Slow Fashion, Long Life
Each handwoven scarf from Threefold Designs is made slowly, with texture, story, and mood woven into every thread. Caring for them is less about rules and more about ritual - making space in your life for things that are soft, meaningful, and long-lasting.

So whether you roll them, hang them, or swaddle them like a favourite spell ingredient (!!), know that you’re doing your part in keeping slow fashion alive.
